Disease burden, healthcare delivery, health outcomes, and life expectancy differ widely across US populations and communities. The Wright Regional Center for Clinical and Translational Science is spearheading an initiative called Virginia Accountable Health Engagement and Action Dashboard (Va-AHEAD), where researchers and community members work together to create data systems that help identify and address health challenges across Virginia. Using advanced tools like HealthLandscape Virginia, we analyze local data to find communities that perform better or worse than expected across a wide variety of health measures. We use novel community-level metrics that span workforce, clinical care, community characteristics, social and economic factors, and health outcomes. The project enlists community input, detailed data analysis, and collaboration with advisory boards to create a model that can be used across the country. This initiative helps track health change, support local goals, and guide action to promote the health of communities.
Primary care
Strengthen primary care. Without high-quality primary care communities struggle to prevent illness and manage chronic disease.
Mental health care
Improve mental health care. Mental health is essential to well-being, yet many communities face barriers to timely and effective services.
Opioid use disorder
Stop the opioid crisis. Opioid use disorder devastates families and communities. Effective treatments and prevention strategies save lives.
Adverse childhood events
Prevent adverse childhood events (ACEs). Early trauma affects health across a lifetime. Supportive environments can build resilience and improve outcomes.
Colorectal cancer
Prevent colorectal cancer deaths. Screening can prevent cancer and save lives, yet too many people go without recommended tests.
Obesity
Promote healthy weight and nutrition. Obesity increases risk for many chronic conditions. Healthy communities can help people lead healthier lives.
Cultural arts
Support health through cultural arts. Participation in arts and culture fosters connection, resilience, and healing in communities.
